Hands Hot Take: Having a Logo is NOT Having Branding

So you’ve got your vision, your product or service is 100% dialed in, and you’re ready to launch your new business. You’re pumped and excited! Your roommate’s friend, who has Photoshop, whipped up a fancy looking logo for you. This means you have branding right? We hate to break it to you, but you don't. You have a logo. The word branding is on the tip of all designer’s tongues these days and we’re here to explain the difference.

What is a logo?

Simply put, a logo is a visual mark that sets your business apart from the competition. It’s a mark that represents what your brand encompasses and communicates to customers, new and old, what you’re all about. When a potential customer goes to your Facebook page and sees your logo, it can make or break whether or not they even decide to look any further! Having a terrible logo can easily deter future customers. This little mark is the bow of your brand. It’s kind of… super important! We’re not here to say that you can’t start your biz journey with just a logo. We design logos all day for clients, but a logo is much less than what branding is on many levels!

What is branding?

Branding the entire package. Branding covers everything from your brand’s name, voice, tone, color palette, and more! Ensuring your branding is in place is essential. Having a logo is important, but as we mentioned earlier, the logo is just the bow. What good is a bow without the wrapping paper, name tag, and gift? Imagine your logo as the tip of the iceberg and below the surface is an entire mass of moving parts! It’s wonderful to have a logo, but if you’re using it in a lime green one day and then light blue the next what are you really communicating to your potential customers? That’s where branding comes in. It keeps all the moving parts well oiled and organized. It makes sure your communicating exactly what you should, how you should.

Both and your brand

Up front, investing in branding may seem daunting and expensive. It costs much more to get the whole beautiful gift than it does the buy a package of bows, we know that. But in the long run, opting for a branding package saves you so much time and money! Try viewing branding as an investment.
